For those of us who love our dogs, taking the time to make them something special is important. These homemade dog treats are also vegan and gluten-free for those allergic dogs. They also have ingredients that dogs absolutely adore.
How to make dog treats that are vegan and gluten-free
These vegan and gluten-free homemade dog treats are made quickly. We just need 3 ingredients to make them: cooked sweet potato, peanut butter and oat flour. We also use water, but I don’t count it as an ingredient. You don’t need a whole lot of cooked sweet potato but only 100g/half a cup. What I did, is I cooked sweet potato for lunch at home and then steal the amount I needed for the recipe. My dog Pepper loves sweet potato and peanut butter, so this makes them the perfect treat to celebrate her birthday today.
Why vegan and gluten-free homemade dog treats?
The advantage of making homemade dog treats is that you know exactly what you’re feeding your dog. The best part is that they don’t contain ingredients you can’t pronounce and they won’t go against your dog’s health. My dog, Pepper, is really allergic in general. That makes it extra important to take care of what ingredients are in her food and treats. For example, she’s very allergic to chicken, which means the recipe cannot contain eggs. On the other hand, there are gluten-sensitive dogs so I decided to go for oat flour. Still, anytime you feed new things to your dog, it’s best to consult with your vet.
Binding the homemade dog treats
Once you have mixed the sweet potato, peanut butter and oat flour, you will add water little by little until the dough comes together and you can knead it. At this moment, the dough for the homemade treats is ready, it’s that easy! You don’t need to knead too much either, we just need the dough to come together and that’s it. This dough can also be frozen if you don’t feel like baking it all in one go. You can also make half a recipe and call it a day as well.
How to shape the cookies
When your dough has come together, you can now roll it out and cut them into any shape you like. I used dog bone cookie cutters to look cute but to be honest, that’s more for me than for Pepper, lol! Actually, these cookies are too big to feed one whole one to Pepper in one go, so I cut them in quarters each time. Decide what you prefer! You can make circles, squares, hearts, whatever you like. It will depend on the size of your dog as well, obviously. Pepper is pretty small so I have to manage these and not feed her too many homemade dog treats at a time.
